Plumber in Roseville, MI

Need a plumber in Roseville? We're based on Janet Ave in Fraser, about a mile above Roseville's 13 Mile Rd border, and the city's postwar basements, sewer laterals and water service lines are a big share of what we work on.

Dense block of small 1950s brick and aluminum-sided ranch houses on narrow lots with short concrete driveways and mature trees

Roseville has the oldest housing of any city on Fraser's borders. The median home was built in 1961, and 47.4 percent of the city's 22,172 housing units went up before 1960. One in three dates to the 1950s alone. Those houses sit close together in a 9.84-square-mile city with about 4,850 people per square mile, so a sewer problem on one lot is never far from the next. Most of that plumbing is 65 years old or more, and Roseville plumbing leans toward the pipes you can't see.

1950s ranches, galvanized pipe and basement floor drains

Postwar blocks off Gratiot Ave typically hold small brick and aluminum-sided ranches and bungalows, often with basements. Three-quarters of Roseville homes are single-family detached, and 65.6 percent are owner-occupied. Inside houses of this age, these are the problems we check for first:

  • Galvanized steel supply pipe, often spliced to newer copper, that rusts from the inside and starves the far fixtures of pressure.
  • Clay or cast-iron sewer laterals with offset joints, cracks or root growth.
  • A basement floor drain tied to the sanitary lateral, which makes it the lowest opening in the house and the first place a backup shows.
  • Water heaters squeezed into a corner between the furnace and that same drain.

Many 1950s houses still mix original galvanized pipe with later copper repairs.

Heavy rain is the stress test. Most of Roseville's storm water drops into catch basins and flows to county-owned drains. Sanitary flow goes through the county's Martin drain district, which Roseville shares with St. Clair Shores, and on to the GLWA treatment plant in Detroit. The Martin facility is a retention treatment basin where wet-weather flows are disinfected with sodium hypochlorite. The June 25-26, 2021 flooding was serious enough that the state asked for Macomb County to be added to a federal disaster declaration. When local sewers surcharge, water climbs toward the lowest drain it can reach, and in a 1950s basement that's the floor drain. Our post on why a floor drain backs up when it pours goes through the mechanics.

Repairs that come up south of 13 Mile Rd

Sewer inspection and line repair

Roseville tells residents to get a second opinion before a sewer is dug up, and a camera run is that opinion. The recording shows where a 1950s clay or cast-iron lateral is cracked, offset or full of roots.

Main water line repair and replacement

The city's 2025 report listed 60 lead and 43 galvanized service lines, with 15,853 still unknown. If yours turns out to be lead or galvanized, replacing the service line is the permanent fix.

Whole home repiping

Nearly 70% of Roseville homes predate 1970, when galvanized supply pipe was still common. Once rust narrows it, the far bathroom loses pressure first, and a repipe can be timed with a service line job.

Drain cleaning and clog removal

Floor drains in older basements often tie into the sanitary lateral, so a slow main shows up there first. Clearing it from the cleanout and then running a camera tells you whether roots are behind it.

Sewer line replacement

Roseville fits about 4,850 people into each square mile, so lots are narrow. Replacing a lateral means planning around driveways, porches and the house next door, which is when trenchless methods get weighed.

Water heater installation

Small 1950s basements leave little room around the tank, the flue and the floor drain. The new unit has to fit that corner, vent correctly and pass an inspection booked through BS&A Online.

Backflow testing and prevention

Roseville runs a residential cross-connection control program and posts a backflow preventer test report form. If your house has a testable device, call to confirm testing availability for that model.

Toilet repair and installation

Nearly half of Roseville's homes predate 1960, so many toilets still sit on original cast iron closet flanges with old shutoff valves that seize when a fill valve or wax ring finally needs replacing.

If someone tells you the sewer has to be dug up, the city's water report recommends a second opinion before excavation, and a recorded sewer camera inspection gives you one with evidence. If your water service turns out to be lead or galvanized, replacing it is the permanent fix, and our article on galvanized pipes in 1950s homes explains when it makes sense to repipe the house in the same project.

How a visit works when you're just across 13 Mile Rd

Most Roseville calls leave our Fraser office and head down Groesbeck Hwy or Kelly Rd.

  1. Call (207) 419-2600. If sewage is coming up through a floor drain, stop running water upstairs and stay out of standing water near outlets and appliances.
  2. If there has been a backup, take photos and write down the date you found it. Public Act 222 sets a 45-day window for a written claim to the city, and Roseville wants a call to its Water and Sewer Department right away.
  3. We clear the line enough to pass a camera, then record the lateral so you can see the joints and pipe condition for yourself.
  4. Permit work goes through the Building Department on BS&A Online.
  5. Before we leave, we show you the main shutoff and the cleanout so you can find them next time.

Lead lines, I-696 and the Gratiot Ave corridor

Roseville buys its water from the Great Lakes Water Authority, treated at the Lake Huron and Northeast plants, and moves it through more than 150 miles of city water and sanitary sewer main. The open question is the pipe between those mains and each house. The 2025 water quality report counted 60 lead service lines, 43 galvanized lines and 15,853 of unknown material. The city has posted a water service line verification audit notice and asks residents to call its water department to set up a material check.

Day to day, Roseville calls follow the age of the houses. Weak flow at the far bathroom or the kitchen tap usually traces back to galvanized pipe. A floor drain that gurgles after a storm points at the lateral. A tank weeping into the corner by the furnace is a water heater near the end, in a space with little room to swap it. The 7.1 percent of homes built before 1940 get an extra look at the service connection where it comes through the wall, since the oldest connections are where unexpected materials turn up.

Houses sit close together, so laterals and service lines run short distances to the street.

I-696 crosses the middle, I-94 runs along the east edge and Gratiot Ave splits Roseville roughly in half, with City Hall at 29777 Gratiot. Macomb Mall has stood near Gratiot and Masonic since 1964, and Roseville High School is on Common Rd. Roseville became a village in 1926 and a city in 1958, right in the building boom that produced most of its houses. Every address in town uses ZIP 48066.

Backup claim and service line questions near Gratiot Ave

My basement backed up. What do I have to do with the city of Roseville?

Call the city's Water and Sewer Department as soon as you find it, then put your claim in writing. Under Public Act 222, you have 45 days from discovering a sewage or storm water backup to file a written claim with Roseville. Photograph the water line on the walls and anything damaged before cleanup starts, and keep every receipt for pumping, cleaning and disposal.

Is my Roseville water service line lead?

It might be. The city's 2025 water report listed 60 lead and 43 galvanized service lines, plus 15,853 whose material was still unknown. You can call the city's water department to schedule a service line verification visit. You can also look where the pipe enters the basement. Lead is dull gray and soft and won't hold a magnet, galvanized steel will, and copper looks like a penny.

Should I get a second opinion before my sewer line is dug up?

Roseville's own water report says to, and the city's Water and Sewerage Department offers help diagnosing home sanitary sewer problems. A recorded camera inspection is the usual second opinion. It shows where a clay or cast-iron lateral is cracked, sagging or packed with roots, how far out the trouble sits, and whether a spot repair or full replacement is the honest call.

Does Roseville require a permit for a new water heater?

Plumbing work goes through the city's Building Department, and Roseville handles permits and inspections on BS&A Online, with contractors registering every year. Ask the department which permit your job needs, and expect a gas unit to involve the mechanical side too. Leave a little slack in the schedule, since most Roseville inspections can't be booked for the next business day.
